St. Joseph, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) has reopened the Bob Brown Conservation Area in Holt County following major repairs to flood damaged infrastructure. Flooding in 2019 damaged roads, levees, and a pump station. Bob Brown is a 3,300-acre wetland area bordering the Missouri River that is popular with waterfowl hunters, birders, and anglers.
The area’s main flood protection levee is managed by a levee district. MDC had to wait on that levee to be fixed before it could address many of the problems, said Blaine Adams, MDC regional maintenance infrastructure manager.
“Once the protection levee was repaired, work could begin on the interior levee breeches, roads, and ditches on the area,” Adams said. “The electrical service to the pump station was destroyed as well.”
But this autumn, the pump is working. Wetland pools in the waterfowl refuge and in the designated hunting areas are flooded. Hunters are having success.
