MDC’s Powder Valley Nature Center hosts Ozark Trail Adventure Workshop Feb. 6

KIRKWOOD, Mo.—The Ozark Trail is 350 miles of outdoor Missouri at its finest. The Missouri Department of Conservation's (MDC's) Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center is hosting an opportunity for the public to learn more about this unique natural and recreational resource.

The Ozark Trail Adventure Workshop will be held at the nature center on Saturday, Feb. 6, from 10 a.m.to 4 p.m. and is free to the public; however, registration is required. The workshop is presented by the Ozark Trail Association. Hikers, backpackers, trail cyclists and equestrians are welcome to attend to discover the many aspects of the Ozark Trail that spans the most scenic areas of the state. The trail traverses numerous MDC conservation areas, state parks and parts of Mark Twain National Forest. It was designated as a National Recreation Trail in 2008.

Morning activities will consist of welcome and introductions, followed by a presentation on Missouri Natural Areas along the trail. Lunch can be ordered in advance during the registration process for $8.

In the afternoon, participants can choose to attend topics in two different session sets. Subjects in session one include:

  • Flora and fauna along the trail
  • Backpacking highlights
  • Trail cycling
  • Trail Building 101

The second set of sessions will explore:

  • Geology and history of the trail
  • Backpacking equipment and clothing
  • Horse trail riding
  • Trail maps
