KIRKWOOD, Mo.—Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) is in Missouri and it poses a threat to our state’s deer herd. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) needs your help stop the spread. The first step to helping is learning about the problem.
Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center, in partnership with the Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA) and the Missouri Chapter of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, will host a CWD Symposium Monday, Aug. 20 from 6-8:30 p.m. at the nature center in Kirkwood.
Experts on CWD and deer health will deliver presentations about the effects of this deadly disease on the deer populations across the state of Missouri. Topics covered will include the history of CWD and its implications for the future, steps and actions MDC is taking to manage the disease, and programs that enable citizens to assist in CWD efforts.
The speakers will be Jason Sumners, MDC Resource Science Division Chief, and Kip Adams, QDMA Director of Conservation. Both experts will also be on hand to answer audience questions during a Q&A period following the program.
CWD is a fatal illness that affects white-tailed deer and other members of the deer family. Since the disease was first detected in Missouri in 2010, it is slowly spreading. MDC is working with the public and conservation partners to find cases and limit its spread. For more information on CWD, go to mdc.mo.gov/CWD.
