Nature and art come together this weekend at the Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center. The nature center will host programs by husband and wife duo Lloyd and Ann Grotjan that combine conservation and creativity for entertaining and educational presentations for the whole family.
Friday evening, May 15 from 7-8 p.m. Powder Valley presents Part of the Circle, an audio-visual extravaganza by photographer and musician Lloyd Grotjan. Grotjan has spent 30 years photographing nature throughout North America’s wild places, including prairies, mountains, savannas and forests. From wildflowers to wildlife, Grotjan combines his extraordinary images with live performances of original musical compositions from his albums Songs from the Ozark Plateau and Twelve Moons.
On Saturday, May 16 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. potter and sculptor Ann Grotjan will be artist in residence at the nature center. She will demonstrate the creation of her unique pieces for visitors to watch first-hand. Grotjan takes her inspiration from flora and fauna of the natural world and imparts her carvings with intricate, nature-related details. Grotjan’s pieces will also be available for purchase.
Both programs are free for all ages and are unique ways to discover nature through art, images and music. Advanced registration for Friday evening is required by calling 314-301-1500. Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center is located at 11715 Cragwold Road in Kirkwood, near the intersection of I-270 and I-44.
