DEFIANCE, Mo.—Duck hunting is almost here. The first season starts in less than a month, with teal hunting opening on Sept. 7. Duck hunting is a sport that can appeal to hunters of all ages. There can be a steep learning curve for a beginning duck hunter, but it can also be overcome with a little help.

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) wants to give duck hunters newly embarking on the sport a kick start by offering a Family Beginning Duck Hunting and Calling class at its August A. Busch Shooting Range and Outdoor Education Center in Defiance. Seats are still available for this free basic course on Tuesday, Aug. 20 from 6-9 p.m.

This is an introduction to the sport of duck hunting. It will cover different types of habitat, duck migration patterns, where to hunt, and key hunting strategies. Knowledgeable MDC staff will offer practical advice on the use of blinds, duck calls, and decoys. Students will also learn important firearm aspects of the sport, such as ammo types, shotgun chokes, and above all, safety. The vital topics of waterfowl identification, hunting regulations, and boat safety will also be covered. Care of game after the hunt will be addressed as well.

Students will also have the chance to work on some basic calling under the guidance of experienced instructors to help prepare for a successful hunt.

The Family Beginning Duck Hunting and Calling class is free and open to anyone age 11 and up, however advanced online registration is required at https://tinyurl.com/y6ycrmnu. Walk-ins may also be accepted if space is available.

MDC offers many free educational events and programs in the St. Louis region to help people discover nature, fishing, hunting, and the outdoors.  Stay informed by subscribing to the free monthly Conservation Connections e-newsletter at https://tinyurl.com/y6auvxmm.
