Winona, Mo. – Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) Twin Pines Conservation Education Center announces Pine Needlers and Wild Edibles programing for May. Some programs require registration in advance, so the center’s manager, Skyler Bockman, said it’s important guests familiarize themselves with MDC’s event website for the center at www.mdc.mo.gov/ozarkevents.
May events at Twin Pines include Pine Needlers and a Cooking Wild Edibles class.
Pine Needlers has two time options on Thursday, May 16. Guests may choose between 10:30 a.m. to noon., or 5 to 6:30 p.m. This month the group will learn about bluestem grass while making a quilt block. Class size is limited so register by May 11. Ages 16 and up are welcome to attend.
Cooking Wild Edibles, Saturday, May 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Register by May 22. Enjoy a class on how to prepare wild foods, such as wild strawberries and sassafras for your table. Other wild plants will also be used depending upon availability. This program is for ages 16 and up. Under 18 must have a parent or guardian present.
“Both of these programs will open up aspects of nature in practical, hands-on ways,” Bockman said.
Guests at Twin Pines can conveniently manage program registration online at www.mdc.mo.gov/ozarkevents. The first step in registering for a program is creating a profile, then signing up for future programs is simple. Once someone creates a profile and registers for an event, they will receive details about programs they’ve registered for.
“Another popular feature we offer is our texting subscription,” Bockman said.
Twin Pines sends program registration reminders and updates to those who sign up by texting, Twin Pines to 468311. Bockman said an online subscription is also available to “sign up for updates” at www.mdc.mo.gov. A variety of updates are available at this option, but Twin Pines specific updates are available under facility updates and news for Ozark region.
Twin Pines events are free, thanks to the 1/8th of 1 percent Conservation State Sales Tax. Twin Pines is located just east of Winona on Highway 60.
