WINONA, Mo. -- Twin Pines Conservation Education Center will host birding expert Cindy Bridges for a birding hike at Greer Crossing Recreation Area from 9 to 11 a.m., Saturday, April 6. Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) naturalists say this will be a great opportunity to learn about birds while enjoying the scenery along the Eleven Point River.

"This is an area where we’ll have great opportunity to see and hear many types of birds,” said Naturalist Reva Dow. “Birdwatching is one of the fastest growing outdoor activities in America, likely because it’s fun and an easy way for people of all ages to discover nature.”

Participants will learn about the basics of birding and the birds that can be found in the Ozarks this spring. Greer Crossing Recreation Area has great habitat to support many different bird species, especially those that will be migrating through the area. The area is listed on eBird.org as a birding hotspot, with 157 species reported, which mean excellent prospects for getting a good start on a birding list.

“You never know what awaits at the next bend in the trail,” Dow said.

The Beginner’s Birding class is free and open to all ages. Hikers will meet at Greer River Access at 9 a.m. or at Twin Pines Conservation Education Center at 8 a.m. to shuttle to Greer.  All ages are welcome. All equipment needed, including bird guides and binoculars will be provided.  Participants should dress for the weather and be prepared with footwear suitable for hiking.  Online reservations are required at www.mdc.mo.gov/events.  For more information, call 573-325-1381.

Twin Pines Conservation Education Center is located at 20086 HWY. 60, Winona.
