ST. LOUIS - The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is hosting a free workshop for landowners, hunters and wildlife enthusiasts who want to learn about managing deer on their property. The workshop will be held Sept. 22 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the MDC Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center in Kirkwood.

Topics addressed during the workshop will include deer biology, herd management, habitat enhancement, incentive programs and deer data collection.

Iconium, Mo. -- Zavia Wheeler studied edible wild plants and seeds, hiked among oak trees and broke some balloons at an archery target range. Then the 13-year-old from Blue Springs crowned her afternoon with fishing for channel catfish at a stocked pond.

“I’ve only caught one so far,” Wheeler said on the pond bank. But that was soon followed by big smiles and “I’ve got another one” as she reeled in her second catfish.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is investigating a fish kill at Lake Contrary in St. Joseph. Heat and drought have caused low dissolved oxygen levels, which caused the fish kill. An estimated 20,000 fish have died, mostly invasive Asian carp, said Scott Ryan, the MDC northwest regional fisheries supervisor.

JACKSON, Mo. -- The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) presents a Youth Dove Hunt for ages 11 to 15 on opening day of dove season, Sept. 1, at Maintz Wildlife Preserve in Cape Girardeau County.

“This is a safe and fun opportunity for our area youth to discover nature through dove hunting,” said MDC Wildlife Management Biologist Matt Bowyer.

Kansas City, Mo. -- A high school team from Missouri used Olympic-like preparations to become North American champs in a science competition based on conservation and natural resources. Students from Pembroke Hill School in Kansas City on July 26 won the 2012 Canon Envirothon, topping teams from 44 states, nine Canadian provinces and one Canadian territory.

Pembroke Hill won by edging out West Hill Secondary School from Owen Sound, Ontario. Third place went to Enloe High School of Raleigh, N.C.

PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- A logging crew from East Perry Lumber Company has been recognized by the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) as “Missouri Logger of the Year.” This award recognizes a person or crew that practices sustainable forest management. East Perry’s three-man crew consists of Tim Schmidt, Adam Hoehn and Ron Stelling.
