In-person MDC events and programs at our nature centers, shooting ranges, and other locations around the state are limited due to COVID-19 considerations. MDC is offering new online programs that allow people to attend virtually. Please check our class listings to see what classes are limited, in-person classes or virtual classes.

Location: August A Busch Shooting Range

This program and hunt is for youth, new to duck hunting, that is interested in learning the skills needed to successfully hunt ducks. We will begin with a mandatory online class on Tuesday, October 13 from 6-7 p.m. to discuss safety, firearms, clothing, hunting techniques, and details of the hunt. All participants for the hunt must attend the mandatory online clinic and be Hunter Education Certified to participate in the hunt on October 25.

Basic Archery for Youth and Adults
If you have an interest in learning how to shoot a bow and arrow, but don’t know where to begin --- or maybe you’ve shot a bow once, but never pursued the activity any further --- this may be the class you’re looking for. Learn the basics of shooting the bow and arrow utilizing some of the techniques and methods that have been adopted by the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP). This course is for youth and adults alike, ages 10 years old and older, with the desire to shoot a bow and arrow, but have little or no experience. Learn archery shooting fundamentals while gaining knowledge about equipment options and choices. Note: All equipment will be provided by the Missouri Department of Conservation. Not recommended if you have shoulder or back injuries.
Dress for the weather and time of year. Entire course will be outdoors. Class will be cancelled in the event of rain.

Please note the following COVID-19 related procedures.
• Bows and arrows will be disinfected before use. Hand sanitizer will be available and will be required at the beginning of class prior to handling equipment.

• Masks should be worn by instructors and participants if social distancing cannot be maintained. Masks are not required during proper social distancing. Please ensure 6 feet of social distance always.

1. Do you, or a person you live with, have:
a. A temperature of 100.4°F or higher, OR
b. Two or more of the following: chills, new loss of taste or smell, or unexplained body aches, headache, or sore throat, OR
c. One or more of the following: dry, non-productive cough (new onset or worsening of chronic cough), shortness of breath, or difficulty breathing?
2. If you have traveled outside of Missouri, did you have contact with anyone known to have COVID-19 or visit an area with high incident of COVID-19?
3. Have you come into contact with anyone who has been sick?
4. In the last two weeks, did you care for or have close contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19?

The weather is changing and the colors of nature are too! Bring your little acorn in to experience the changing colors of fall. We will go on a short hike and explore the forest fun area. No more than one adult with each registered participant. Additional siblings or unregistered participants will not be able to attend.

Fall is coming! With its cooler temperatures plants and animals will be starting to change and prepare for the next of our Missouri seasons. Join us for a few 30-minute virtual programs hosted by our Runge Naturalists, each exploring a different aspect of our natural world.

Date: Tuesday, October 27, 2020 - 4:30pm to 6:30pm

Location: Big Creek Conservation Area

This is a free workshop that will help new shooters as well as migratory and upland bird hunters improve their hunting skills. Topics include: how to select the best ammunition and choke combination for hunting, how to improve your shooting skills, how to improve your range & distance estimation skills, and how to properly pattern your shotgun.
Participants should bring their hunting shotgun & choke tubes if applicable, non-toxic shotgun ammunition they wish to pattern, eye/ear protection, and a stool or chair. Clay targets, 12 & 20-gauge practice ammunition will be provided.

Date: Tuesday, October 27, 2020 - 6:00pm to 7:00pm

Location: Virtual

Learn how to make the right calls at the right time to attract deer closer to your position. We will discuss the different vocalizations whitetails make and what those sounds communicate to other deer. We will finish with calling scenarios in hunting situations followed by a Q & A session. You must register to attend and provide a valid email to receive a link to join the virtual program.

Date: Tuesday, October 27, 2020 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm

Location: Virtual

This virtual program will help hunters ensure that they are keeping safety in mind, as they take to the field this fall. We will review the key components to be a safe hunter which will include the following: primary safety rules, safe loading and unloading of firearms, safe firearm carries, safe zones of fire, crossing an obstacle, hunting from a ground blind, hunting from elevated stands, and using a hunting plan. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions during the program. You must register to attend and provide a valid email to receive a link to join the virtual program. * Please note that this does not meet hunter education certification requirement's*

Spiders aren’t scary, they are spectacular! From the intricate webs they weave to helping us keep pesky insects under control, they really are fascinating creatures. We will explore the life of a spider and learn how to identify some of our local spiders. (ages 10–15)

Location: Virtual

Participants will be making a Balsa crankbait at location of their choice through the convenience of Web-Ex programming. Materials and instructions will be sent to you prior to the on-line clinic. Some additional supplies will be needed. A list will be included in the packet. To participate in this clinic a device with internet capabilities to run the Web-Ex application is necessary .

Do you have a family heirloom cast iron pan collecting dust in the corner? Well dust it off and learn how cast iron can improve your cooking skills. This program will focus on care and cleaning of cast iron cookware, including proper seasoning of the metal. We will also provide demonstration and a simple recipe for cast iron Dutch ovens. (ages 12+)

Archery has come a long way, from wooden longbows to the modern crossbow. Join us as we learn the basics of how to safely load and shoot a crossbow and make our best shot with this easy and fun archery method. Meet at the Runge outdoor pavilion before heading to the Runge outdoor range. Dress for the weather in closed-toed shoes. The Runge outdoor range is not ADA accessible.

Date: Friday, October 30, 2020 - 3:00pm to Sunday, November 1, 2020 - 3:00pm

Location: Rest Inn Him Lodge and Retreat Center

This event is a partnership between The Department, The Outdoor Dream Foundation, Missouri Disabled Sportsmen, and Rest Inn Him Lodge. This event is limited to those diagnosed with terminal or life-threatening illnesses. Applicants will be sent formal application paperwork following their registration on this site. Outdoor Dream will review applications, and provided any necessary hunting gear for successful applicants. Rest Inn Him will provide lodging and activities for participants during the weekend. Missouri Disabled Sportsmen will provide funding for meals. The Department will supply track chairs, equipment & supplies, as well as necessary staff. Participants will attend a deer hunting clinic, be taken on a guided deer hunt, and have some time for fishing and other activities around deer camp.

Fish or Treat - Halloween Fishing for Families

Everyone is welcome, wear your Halloween costume if you like and spend a little family time fishing this Halloween. Of course everyone gets to fish but we'll also have fishing themed games and prizes for biggest fish of the day and scariest costume. We'll also have a bonfire where you can warm up if you get chilly.

Rods, tackle, bait and fishing coaches will be provided.

Fishing permit are NOT required to fish during this event.

Children under 15 must be accompanied by an adult.

Please be sure to register each participant who will be attending separately. Contact the instructor if you need any assistance with registration.

This hunt is designed for hunters who have archery hunted for deer in the past, but have been unsuccessful. To be eligible for this hunt you must not have previously filled an Archery Deer Permit .Beginning hunters are also welcome to apply.
